The Widow's Mites

Mark 12:41-44-What was the significance of the Widow’s gift?

I believe that she loved the Lord with all of her heart.  She wanted to give all that she possessed to the Lord in gratitude for what she had received from Him.   I also believe that she understood that all that she had was the Lord’s to begin with and it was His generosity that sustained her.

What is most amazing about her gift was that she gave absolutely everything, holding nothing back for herself.  There were several wealthy individuals that went before her who gave large sums of money, yet their gifts paled in comparison to her own.  The reason for their deficiencies was that their great sums of money were from their excess stores.  Their donations did not make their situations uncomfortable and would not be missed, while the widow would have to rely entirely on the Lord for her sustenance.  Her love of God surpassed anything that man could offer her.  After all we can do the Lord will, by His grace, provide for us.

As I was thinking about what the widow sacrificed, I had to stop and think about what ways I show that I will give my all to the Lord and how I will rely on Him.  Though our financial resources are not great, I feel more comfortable giving of those stores more than my time.  I realize that I can be very selfish with my time.  I have done a lot of thinking and my scripture reading and prayers are not as great as they used to be.  Rather than feeding my spirit, I feel that my focus has become more oriented in doing what I want to do and not what I should do.  Another area that I need to focus on is using my time to more effectively prepare lessons for Primary and go visiting teaching.  Increasing my time in each of those areas, among many others, will serve as an example of my testimony and gratitude to the Lord for what I have been given.

  1. Munk: You are right on about what I need to do! Time is the great gift you can give that speaks SELF.
