Recently I was reading in Luke 11:5-13 and read about “The
Parable of the Friend at Midnight”. There are several ideas that stood out to
me about what a friend or a disciple of Jesus includes. A few of these attributes include:
selflessness, desire to serve, faith, and trust. I realize that although each attribute is
important, I am going to focus on just two: faith and trust. I struggle with having faith and trust in
others. I have thought a lot about this
over the last several years and I have come up with a few answers. The first reason why I believe that I have a
lack of faith or trust for others is that I don’t fully trust or believe in myself. As I have matured, I have increased my
ability to trust and believe in myself by taking small steps in making and
accomplishing my goals. Through this
experience I am learning that the more I put these principles into practice the
more I am able to apply them to being a better friend by increasing my trust
and faith in others.
I believe that the more we increase our attributes as a
friend, we will draw closer to God. This
is because God has set the ultimate example of what a friend should be, and as
we emulate His example we will become more like him. When we recognize that all we have comes from
Him, as we are reminded to do in Mosiah 2:34, our gratitude, love, and desire
to be His friend will increase.
Ultimately our life will find a greater purpose and joy as we live
worthily to return to His presence.
